I have been thinking to upgrade my D70s camera as its been long since I bought it and newer models have so many technical advances. I slowly started building fund for the upgrade as I am not a very rich person. I was leaning towards a D300 as I find autofocus of D70s quite limiting while I am on wild or birding trips.
One day while browsing through DPREVIEW, I came across a post in retouch section. The person had posted an interesting photograph for retouch. I couldn’t resist and downloaded the RAW file for retouch and my trouble started.
The photograph was taken using Nikon D700. First I couldn’t open the RAW file as I have all old softwares and they were not compatible with the new camera RAW file. So I downloaded some new trial versions of new softwares and was able to finally convert it into TIFF file.
Second big problem I encountered was my computer was giving up on processing. I do my processing on a 2 GHz Pentium IV processor, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB Hard Disk computer. I keep quite a lot of free space on my hard drive for virtual memory but still processing was quite slow.
This dampened my spirit for camera upgrade because upgrade of camera would have necessarily forced me in computer upgrade. So the total cost of upgrade would have been huge.
So instead of upgrading my camera & computer, I picked up my trusted D70s with Nikon N75 film camera as backup and went to a hill station. Clicked few nice pictures along with spending romantic time with wife. I was happy and so was my wife.
Ah before I forget, the hill station trip took away half of the savings I had done for new camera but gave me few nice keeper pictures. Below is a sample:
