This is recent discovery I did in my Nikon D70s camera after using it for almost 4 years. Sometimes it used to baffle me when I was not able to separate focus from shutter release button. But yesterday while playing with menu items, I discovered AE-L/AF-L button can also be set as AF-ON button. The trick is going into menu and assigning the function.
Below are the steps:
Goto Custom Settings menu (Indicated with Pencil)
Choose settings for AE-L/AF-L button. There are various options e.g.
AE/AF lock
AE lock only
AF lock only
AF-ON (this is the one needs to be selected). This disassociates focus function from shutter release button and assigns to AE-L/AF-L button. This is useful when tracking needs to be done in continuous focus mode.
